Why Madeira Should Be Your Next Island Escape

Read Ken's blog about his recent winter sun break in Madeira, and why it's a great option for a last-minute getaway.

If you're dreaming of a destination that combines jaw-dropping landscapes, rich culture, and year-round sunshine, let me introduce you to Madeira, Portugal’s lush Atlantic island that feels like a secret paradise.

From the moment you land in Funchal, Madeira’s capital, the island greets you with vibrant colours, fragrant gardens and a laid-back charm that’s hard to resist. The streets are lined with historic buildings, cosy cafés and markets bursting with tropical fruits and local crafts. It’s the kind of place where you can sip a glass of Madeira wine while watching the sun dip below the horizon... and feel like time has stopped just for you.

But Madeira isn’t just about relaxing. It’s a playground for nature lovers. Hike through the UNESCO-listed Laurisilva forest; follow the famous levada trails that wind through mountains and valleys, or take a cable car up to Monte for panoramic views that will leave you speechless. And if you’re into water sports, the island’s rugged coastline offers everything from whale watching to scuba diving.

Over the course of the week, we did the Pico do Arriero Sunrise Tour, the Full Day Madeira Island Tour and of course the Responsible Whale & Dolphin Watching Tour- each of which we booked before flying out (ensuring our places and the best price) and each of which I can highly recommend!

One of the best parts? The locals. Madeirans are incredibly welcoming and proud of their island’s heritage. Whether you’re enjoying a folklore festival, tasting traditional dishes like espetada (grilled beef skewers), or learning about the island’s volcanic origins, you’ll feel like you’re part of something special.

And for all the Star Wars fans out there... Did you know? The  Acolyte used Madeira for some of the filming locations:

  • Fanal Forest: This mystical forest with its ancient trees and mist was used for scenes like the Jedi landing site.
  • Ribeira da Janela: The dramatic sea stacks here were used for shots that Lucasfilm wanted to feel otherworldly.
  • Pico do Areeiro: This viewpoint was used for establishing shots of the planet Khofar.

Madeira is more than a destination, it’s an experience. Peaceful yet adventurous, traditional yet modern, it’s the kind of place that stays with you long after you’ve left. With Winter flights from Shannon & Dublin for less than €50, there is no excuse!
