If you're thinking about taking a solo holiday, cruising is a fantastic option that's growing in popularity. Our cruise manager Ken addresses some of the most frequently asked questions we get from clients:
Embarking on a solo cruise may seem daunting at first, but the rewards are as vast as the open sea. The common misconception that cruises are meant for couples or groups is rapidly fading. In fact, the cruise industry is adapting to the increasing number of solo travellers, with many cruise lines introducing amenities and events tailored for those sailing solo. I have cruised solo twice- once in the Caribbean and once on the Med.
1. Do many people cruise alone?
In short, yes! Cruise aficionados will be delighted to know that Norwegian Cruise Line leads the way in catering to solo travellers. Their newer ships feature studio staterooms designed exclusively for single passengers. To foster a sense of camaraderie, they also offer lounges where solo travellers can meet fellow cruisers, share pre-dinner drinks and make dining arrangements.
But it's not just NCL! Royal Caribbean, MSC and many other cruise lines are offering studio cabins and increasing amenities for solo travellers too. Each cruise line and itinerary offers something different. Just let us know what type of holiday you're looking for, and we'll advise you on the best option for you.
2. What are the benefits of cruising solo?
The beauty of solo cruising lies in the freedom to curate your perfect journey. Every decision, from choosing excursions to leisurely activities, is solely yours to make. Worries about loneliness dissipate as cruise ships host various activities and gatherings for solo travellers.
The absence of companions can enhance connections with like-minded individuals, making the experience richer and more fulfilling. Choose to spend your days being pampered in the spa, marvelling at spectacular stage shows and visiting incredible destinations, on your terms.
3. What are the best ways to meet other people?
To banish any concerns about solitude, dicing into on-board activities for singles is key. Excursions present another avenue to connect with fellow travellers. Many solo cruisers have formed lasting connections by joining an excursion and later engaging in lively conversations when back on board. Some of our clients have even met people that they've subsequently cruised with again!
4. Will I have to eat alone?
Not at all. The fear of dining alone is dispelled on a solo cruise. If you're not part of a group, requesting to be seated with other singles or opting for a mixed table is always an option. The cruise experience emphasizes inclusivity, ensuring that every meal is a chance to forge new connections.
5. Must I pay a single supplement?
While some cruise lines still impose single supplements, others frequently offer sailings with no additional charges for solo travellers in their studio staterooms. The trend is shifting, with an increasing number of cruise companies introducing single cabins, marking a positive shift towards making solo cruising more accessible.
In essence, cruising alone is not just an option; it's a voyage of self-discovery, connection, and boundless freedom. So, set sail solo and embrace the extraordinary journey that awaits – a cruise crafted entirely for you.
