FIVE FANTASTIC DAYS ONBOARD LEGEND OF THE SEAS

Caroline and Lynda from our Clonakilty branch are just back from their cruise onboard the new Legend Of The Seas. Read about their experience:

"Lynda and I have just spent five fantastic days onboard Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas, attending Royal Caribbean’s EMEA Seminar at Sea and gaining intimate knowledge of Royal Caribbean's cruise portfolio. We were incredibly impressed! 

Getting There & Boarding 

We flew from Cork to Barcelona and were met at the airport by Royal Caribbean representatives for our transfer to the ship, which took approximately 20 minutes. Our first impression was simply the size of the ship- it’s enormous! With capacity for approximately 7,500 guests and 2,500 crew, it really is like a floating resort. 

Check-in was seamless. Everything was already available on the Royal Caribbean app, including our Sail Pass. After boarding, our first stop was our Muster Station for the compulsory safety briefing, and then it was time for lunch! 

Food & Dining 

First, we headed to the Windjammer, Royal Caribbean’s buffet restaurant, which offers an incredible choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There really is something for everyone, and we enjoyed it so much that we returned several times during the cruise. 

On three of our evenings we chose My Time Dining in the main dining room. It's an impressive restaurant, spread across three floors. The food was excellent, with a great choice of delicious three-course meals. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful each night.

There are also numerous other dining options (28 in total) included in the cruise fare, including the AquaDome Market, Pearl Café and El Loco Fresh- which were among our favourites. 10 specialty restaurants are also available at an additional cost and generally need to be booked in advance. These specialty venues provide premium menus and unique dining experiences. You can also expect a more intimate setting. Overall, the standard and variety of food onboard were outstanding. And of course there are 24 bars to choose from all over the ship.

Our Cabin 

We stayed in a Family Infinite Balcony cabin, designed with families in mind. It included a double/ twin bed, sofa bed and a separate children’s sleeping area with two single beds and individual TVs.  The bathroom is cleverly divided into two sections- one with a toilet and sink and another with a shower and sink- making getting ready much easier for families. 

The Infinite Balcony is different from a traditional walk-out balcony. At the touch of a button, the upper section of the window lowers to create an open-air feel while retaining the additional cabin space. There is a huge choice of cabin types onboard and we inspected a large range of them. Choosing the right one is important for getting the most from your cruise. Ask us for advice and we’ll be delighted to help. 

World-Class Entertainment 

The entertainment was one of the highlights of our trip. We pre-booked our shows through the Royal Caribbean app before travelling, which we would strongly recommend as the most popular performances can fill quickly. We saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Wonka), a spectacular West End-style musical. We also went to see Shockwaves, an incredible AquaDome production featuring diving, ballet and dance. We'd also recommend seeing Fusion, a fantastic ice-skating show.  The quality of the productions really has to be seen to be believed. 

Something for Everyone 

There's an incredible amount to do onboard for both adults and children. Families have the dedicated Surfside neighbourhood, while activities throughout the ship include; swimming pools, waterslides, FlowRider surfing, the Crown’s Edge, minigolf, a climbing wall, spa, gym and plenty of areas to relax. 

Kids’ clubs cater for children from six months to 17 years, while adults also have dedicated spaces to escape and unwind. You certainly won’t be short of things to do! 

A Few Things to Consider 

We absolutely loved the lively atmosphere onboard, but with so many guests, this is a large and busy ship. It’s worth considering whether that style of holiday suits you. 

There are also additional costs to budget for. Wi-Fi and drinks packages, for example, can be expensive, particularly for families. We would recommend discussing these extras with us  before travelling so you know exactly what to expect. 

Exploring Ashore 

One of the major benefits of holidaying this way is the opportuity to disembark at the various ports along the itinerary. On our Med cruise, we stayed onboard in Palma but took an excursion from La Spezia to the beautiful Cinque Terre. This was a full-day trip from approximately 8am to 5pm, and it was well worth doing. 

Royal Caribbean offers a wide selection of excursions through its app, while independent options are also available. Ask us about excursions and we can help you find the best option for your trip. 

Royal Caribbean Training 

As part of the Seminar at Sea, we attended two mornings of training and Q&A sessions with members of the onboard team, including the captain. It was a valuable opportunity to learn more about the Royal Caribbean experience firsthand and will help us when advising our own customers. 

Our Verdict 

We flew home from Rome via London Heathrow with British Airways, and then onwards to Cork. This route is an option many might not consider, but one that worked extremely well and was more convenient and better value than travelling through Dublin. 

Overall, we loved every minute of our cruise. From the food and entertainment to the facilities and service, the experience was truly world-class. Most importantly, experiencing the ship ourselves means we can now give you genuine, first-hand advice about cruising with Royal Caribbean.
