Tenerife Volcanic landscapes. Tenerife is the largest island of the Canaries archipelago, it is home to a great variety of microclimates that shape the landscape in its everlasting spring. In the north, the rain is more frequent making it the perfect habitat for green forests while the south of the island is drier and sunnier and very popular for its warm water beaches. The highest mountain in Spain, El Teide, a 3718 meters volcano, majestically dominates the whole island and provides impressive rocky landscapes in its huge “caldera” over 2000 meters above the sea.
Tenerife Volcanic landscapes will take you hiking in the pine-forested hills of Vilaflor before going up to hike on the semi-desert landscape on the base of the big volcano peak. The isolation of the mountain and its clear skies makes it one of the best places in Europe for stargazing. Down to Santiago del Teide, the winding hills will amaze you with their unique plants and views over mount Teide. From Buenavista del Norte to Garachico the walk follows the rough coastline pinpointed by lovely small beaches. Your last walk above the picturesque village of Garachico will present you with stunning views over the Atlantic for a Grand Finale.
PLEASE NOTE: The distances on this itinerary are offered purely as a guide. On some days you may have a choice of routes and for this reason the daily and overall distances are variable.
Day 1 - Vilaflor
You will be collected from Tenerife South Airport or Tenerife North Airport and brought to your accommodation in Vilaflor. The transfer will take about 40 minutes from Tenerife South Airport
Day 2 - Vilaflor
Your first walking stage will be a loop walk on the hills around Vilaflor in the pleasant trails under the shade of pine forests. Take a break and enjoy the views over the lower towns below facing the ocean from the high of the hills 1,700 meters above the sea. You will have a choice of 2 loop walks:
- Option 1: 11.0km (+373m, -380m)
- Option 2: 14.5km (+604m,- 622m)
Day 3 - Teide
In the morning you will be transferred to the Parador de Canadas del Teide. Have a quick look around, this is a unique semi-desert alpine scenery dominated by Mount Teide. This rough isolated environment developed species that can only be found here, hence, the statute of National Park. You have a choice of 3 loop walks:
- Option 1: 16.0km (+335m, -333m)
- Option 2: 11.8km (+186m, -181m)
- Option 3: 4.2km (+149m, -152m)
Day 4 - Santiago del Teide
In the morning you will be transferred from Teide to Santiago del Teide. On this day you leave the high mountain for a more traditional environment. Santiago del Teide is a small town with whitewashed little houses and is going to be your home for tonight. The surrounding areas of the town are called Montanas Negras for a reason, here one can see the result of more recent lava flows, giving the landscape a darker tone contrasted by the strong green of trees. Definitely a different experience. Down the valley, by the sea, there are two lively holiday resort towns facing west, good for great sunsets! From here you will have a choice of 2 loop walks.
- Option 1: Coastal 11.7km (+736m, -735m)
- Option 2: Mountains 16.4km (+520m, -520m)
Day 5 - Santiago del Teide
Today you can choose to walk the other loop or have a day at leisure. Visiting the beaches of Puerto de Santiago and La Arena are some of the suggestions.
Day 6 - Garachico
After breakfast, you will be brought to Buenavista del Norte. From here the path is down to the coastline where you will spend your day between mountains and the Atlantic. Its a gentle walk on the top of hills pinpointed by small beaches in the jagged coast.
Walk details: 15.2km (+143m, -247m)
Day 7 - Garachico
This day reserves a walk with historical contours. The loop around Garachico will bring you to walk over the river of lava left by the last eruption that affected the town building the natural lava pools where we can bath ourselves today.
Walk details: 11.1km (+774m, -793m)
