Explore Australia's vast Northern Territory with this self-drive itinerary.

Enjoy the city of Darwin's balmy weather and eclectic food and culture at outdoor festivals, waterfront restaurants, tropical parklands and art precincts. Get a taste of Darwin at Mindil Beach Markets, sail Darwin Harbour and trace the region's dramatic history at the local museums.

Then, drive to the World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park, a natural and cultural wonder around three hours from Darwin. Discover detailed Aboriginal art galleries, hike to the top of rugged escarpments and cruise the wetlands past waterlilies, waterfalls, crocodiles and migratory birds.

You next stop is the town of Katherine, which offers museums, art galleries and historic sites. Katherine is a great place to purchase authentic Aboriginal art and artefacts; or create your own original dot painting to take home.

Next, head to the jewel in the crown of the region - Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park. The park sits at the southern tip of Kakadu National Parkland's Aboriginal-owned Arnhem Land. Here you'll find a landscape of rugged sandstone cliffs, dramatic waterfalls and lush rainforest. The Edith Falls waterfalls flow all year round and are a great spot for swimming, picnics and camping.

Before heading back to Darwin theres one last chance to emmerse yourself in the stunning scenery the Northern Territory offers. Litchfield National Park is full of lush woodlands, spectacular waterfalls, sparkling plunge pools and tall termite mounds. This park is renowned for its accessible, unspoiled wilderness of monsoon rainforests and waterfalls that flow year-round.
