Explore the east coast of America; stay on Hatteras Island, North Carolina, and Virginia Beach, Virginia
Fly to from Dublin via New York to Norfolk and collect your hire car to begin this seven night fly/ drive holiday.
Make the three hour drive south from Norfolk in the state of Virgina, along the eastern sea coast and into North Carolina- travelling along the string of barrier islands and spits known as the Outer Banks.
This drive offers some of the most breaktaking scenery on the east coast, with a subtropical climate and lots of expansive beachfront.
On the way, you'll pass through the town of Kitty Hawk- site of the Wright brothers' first airplane flight in 1903. A sixty-foot tall granite monument now stands on the edge of a national park as a memorial to this historic occassion.
Take the time to stop at Roanoke Island, the location of England's first colony in Northern America, established in 1585 by Sir Walter Raleigh.
You'll stay four nights on Hatteras Island, known for its wildlife and stunning natural beauty. The large expanses of beach offer a variety of water sports, including windsurfing, kayaking, kiteboarding and swimming.
The Cape Pines Motel offers air-conditioned guestrooms, with free toiletries, wifi and a fridge in every room. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is less than a five minute drive from this property.
Fishing is a very popular recreation activity in the area, with in-shore charters available in Pamlico Sound. Deep sea angling is available about two hours from the coast. The warm waters of the Gulf Stream ensure a variety of marine life, including blue and white marlin, tuna, wahoo and mahi mahi.
About an hour from Hatteras Island you'll find Ocracoke Island, the hide-out of the famous 18th century pirate Blackbeard. The historic city of Raleigh, capital of North Carolina, is about a four-hour drive from Hatteras Island.
The next part of your fly- drive holiday brings you to Virginia Beach, about three hours back up along the coast.
This city has miles of beaches stretching along the oceanfront, including the world's longest pleasure beach, according to Guinness World Records.
Relax on the unspoilt beaches, take part in water sports or get active on the miles of hiking and cycling routes through marshland, forests, dunes and ponds. During the summer months the beaches play host to music and food festivals, cultural events and celebrations.
You'll stay for three nights at the Ocean Beach Club, a modern three-star hotel just a minute's walk from the beach. Guestrooms are furnished with cable TV and a kitchenette, while guests are invited to make use of the gym, indoor and outdoor pools and poolside cafe and bar.
Virginia Beach is home to historic buildings like the Adam Thoroughgood House (built c. 1680) and the Ferry Plantation House. The Military Aviation Museum houses the world's largest private collection of aircraft, including bombers, fighters and seaplanes from World War II and the Korean War.
The fantastic Virginia Aquarium contains over 800,000 gallons of water and hundreds of exhibits. It's also home to a great National Geographic 3D Theatre. For something a little different, visit the Virginia Beach Surf and Rescue Museum. This quaint museum showcases rescue equipment used by turn-of-the-century surf men.
