Colombia is a bird-lovers paradise, with at least 1,870 species spread out over some of the most diverse habitats, from high Andean páramo to wet coastal jungle.
Among the birds listed are 74 native species, which are found nowhere else on earth. This includes the blue-knobbed curassow, the Santa Marta sabrewing, and the chestnut-winged chachalaca.
Check out the resurgence of culture, art, and food in the capital city of Bogotá, and visit the famous Paloquemao Market.
Visit Cali's Museo La Tertulia for the impressive modern art collection, or view the cinematography equipment on display in the Caliwood Museum. Learn about the region's pre-Columbian cultures at La Merced archaeological museum.
Day 1: Bogotá
- Arrival in Bogotá and transfer to the hotel. Remainder of the day at leisure.
- Optional city tour.
Day 2: Bogotá - Cali
- Fly to Cali, the third largest city in Colombia. Dating from 1536, this is a vibrant salsa city with both modern elements and historical heritage.
- Day at leisure to enjoy the sights of Cali.
Day 3: Cali
- This morning guests leave early for Finca La Araucana.
- Spend the morning here birdwatching, with close-up views of the green honeycreeper, flame-rumped tanager and the scrub tanager.
- After lunch enjoy further birdwatching at the Bichacue Yath Reserve, a fairy garden with great birdwatching options.
Day 4: Cali
- Today discover the birdlife of the nearby cloud forest.
- This is a paradise for tanagers. Guests will search out the purplish-mantled, summer, golden, metallic-green, saffron-crowned and golden-naped tanagers.
- Other birds include the hyperactive cinnamon flycatcher. An impressive show of hummingbirds can be observed at Raul’s Place, including the green violetear, the long- tailed sylph and the white-necked jacobin.
Day 5: Cali
- Birdwatching at the higher elevations of the Bosque de San Antonio.
- Lunch at Eduardo Carvajal’s house.
Day 6: Cali - Pereira
- Today guests leave for the Sonso Lagoon, one of the few remaining wetlands in the Cauca Valley and one of Colombia’s best birdwatching localities.
- Search the waters for wattled jacaa, snowy egret, spotted sandpipers. In the afternoon, continue to Pereira.
Day 7: Pereira
- Early drive to the Nature Reserve of Rio Blanco.
- Visit to the house of hummingbirds and take a nature walk.
- Look for several species of native and migratory birds.
Day 8: Pereira
- Excursion to the Sanctuary Wildlife Otún Quimbaya Reserve, an ideal setting to observe many species of birds, butterflies and small mammals.
Day 9: Pereira - Bogotá
- Return to Bogotá. Optional visit to the Gold Museum.
