Made up of six distinct luxury lodges, there is an option for all types of guest. For couples or honeymooners, we recommend the newly refurbished Eagles Crag Lodge, with nine suites each featuring an elegant bedroom with four poster bed, opening onto a private deck with plunge pool and sun loungers.

Riverdene Lodge, also newly refreshed, is perfect for families, offering an infinity pool, playroom, outdoor adventure area and supervised ‘Kids on Safari’ programme.

Restaurants & Bars

Each of the stunning five star lodges are organised and operate as individual properties, each with staff, chefs and dining areas. Indoor and outdoor dining options are available and usually alternate.

We’d like to take a moment to share some of the exciting projects and updates introduced in 2024 to further elevate the guest experience at Shamwari. Here’s a look at what’s new:

• Sarili Private Villa: Our newly refurbished Sarili Private Villa now accommodates up to 12 guests, offering an even more luxurious stay. The updates include a private spa treatment room, fitness centre, additional plunge pool, and six beautifully appointed river-facing rooms.
• Sindile: We introduced a new relaxation retreat area, featuring a single and couples’ treatment room, a fitness centre with an ice bath, and a private, romantic hot tub area nestled in the bush for those seeking ultimate tranquillity.
• Bayethe: A new relaxation treatment room and a fitness centre, ensuring that guests can unwind and rejuvenate in comfort and style.
• Riverdene Lodge: A new double treatment room and fitness centre at Riverdene, finalized in June 2024, designed to provide guests with a serene wellness experience.
• Private Vehicles at Riverdene: Starting in April 2025, families booking at Riverdene will be guaranteed private vehicles for their game drives, ensuring a personalized and exclusive safari experience.
• Butler Service at Sindile and Sarili: To further enhance luxury and convenience, butler service ensures an impeccable level of service.
• Swarovski Binoculars: To enhance game viewing, each couple now receives a pair of Swarovski Binoculars to use during their game drives, offering an exceptional experience in the bush.
• Bushman’s River Boat Experience: For a minimum 3-night stay, guests can enjoy a serene boat experience on the Bushman’s River, a unique way to connect with nature.
• MetaClinic at Shamwari: Shamwari is proud to have partnered with MetaClinic, ensuring that our staff and their families receive the highest standard of medical care.
• Vulpro@Shamwari: Launched in January 2024, our unique captive breeding centre is the only one of its kind in Africa. Injured vulture species that can’t fly are bred in captivity, and their healthy young are released back into the wild. This is an additional guest experience at our Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

We are committed to continually enhancing the Shamwari experience for our valued guests.

You’ll enjoy two game drives a day, during which, as well as the famed Big Five, you’ll have the opportunity to spot an abundance of other wildlife, including cheetah, zebra, giraffe, hyena and hippo.

The reserve also demonstrates a fierce passion for wildlife conservation and guests can join a poignant tour of the Born Free Foundation’s Big Cat Rescue Centre, to learn about animals rescued from captivity around the world, as well as visit the Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and the Ian Player Rhino Awareness Centre.

In partnership with actress, author and wildlife campaigner, Virginia McKenna’s Born Free Foundation, Shamwari Private Game Reserve designed the Animal Rescue and Education Centres to incorporate the sanctuary and educational facility.

Their goal is to create awareness of the horrific way in which wildlife is exploited in captivity around the world. The centres aim to draw attention to the plight of wild big cats, confined in impoverished, captive environments throughout the world.

Over the years the Born Free Foundation has been able to rescue several big cats from impoverished situations. Born Free focuses on promoting the conservation of species and the protection of habitat whilst maintaining a humane and compassionate approach to the welfare of animals.
