The Vienna Christmas Markets are an age-old tradition, dating back to the medieval period. In 1296 the king, Albrecht I, allowed the people to hold a "Krippenmarkt" in December. Since then, the festival has evolved into a truly stunning experience, with traditional foods, crafts and gifts on offer across several market sites.

Rathausplatz is Vienna's most famous Christmas market, offering much more than just stalls. It features activities for all ages, including ice skating, a magical train, and stunning lights- perfect for capturing great photos. 

The Schönbrunn market, though farther from the city centre, remains popular for its beautiful setting. The magnificent Schönbrunn Castle, its expansive park, the Glorietta viewpoint, and the zoo make it a must-visit for families.

Christmas Markets in Vienna usually open over a number of days at the end of November, and remain open until December 25th, or for some- into the New Year. Please check individual market opening dates locally.
