Your chance to spot the 'Big 5' up close as they roam free under the African sun. Stay three nights at Shamwari Game Reserve before continuing to Cape Town.
Shamwari encompasses 25,000 hectares of protected land teeming with indigenous wild animals and plants. This is the perfect option for a safari experience at the end of the garden route.
With the aim of restoring this area of the Eastern Cape to its former glory, Shamwari Private Game Reserve was born of a need to conserve the land and its abundant wildlife, birdlife and ecological diversity.
Made up of six distinct luxury lodges, there is an option for all types of guest.
For couples or honeymooners, we recommend the newly refurbished Eagles Crag Lodge, with nine suites each featuring an elegant bedroom with four poster bed, opening onto a private deck with plunge pool and sun loungers.
Riverdene Lodge, also newly refreshed, is perfect for families, offering an infinity pool, playroom, outdoor adventure area and supervised ‘Kids on Safari’ programme.
More adventurous guests can spend part of their Shamwari experince on a two-night trail in the bush. Stay at the Explorer Camp, set among the only basalt and granite extrusions in Shamwari. The camp is discreetly fenced for safety reasons, but offers guests a unique explorer ambiance.
Each of the stunning five star lodges are organised and operate as individual properties, each with staff, chefs and dining areas. Indoor and outdoor dining options are available and usually alternate.
Where Table Mountain meets the V&A Waterfront. This 4 star hotel is located within the city of Cape Town and offers bright rooms with views over the ocean.
It is close to the V&A Waterfront and located next to bars and an oceanarium. A spa lounge, a health club and a Jacuzzi are offered for relaxation. This four-star hotel has a sundeck, outdoor swimming pool and a fitness centre/gym. All 234 rooms are equipped with minibar, hairdryer, safe and air conditioning.
A hot buffet breakfast is served every morning. The excellent restaurant offers delicious meals. The Poolside bar features a terrace and Wi-Fi.
You’ll enjoy two game drives a day, during which, as well as the famed Big Five, you’ll have the opportunity to spot an abundance of other wildlife, including cheetah, zebra, giraffe, hyena and hippo.
The reserve also demonstrates a fierce passion for wildlife conservation. Guests can join a poignant tour of the Born Free Foundation’s Big Cat Rescue Centre, to learn about animals rescued from captivity around the world, as well as visit the Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and the Ian Player Rhino Awareness Centre.
Start them young with our special Kids on Safari Programme, which aims to entertain and educate kids about the importance of nature conservation.
At Shamwari Private Game Reserve we’re passionate about the conservation of nature and the animals within the reserve.
One of our endeavours includes the Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, which helps to rehabilitate and care for sick, injured, abandoned or orphaned animals under the care of our professional veterinary team. Once these animals have been nursed back to health, they are released back into their natural habitat.
As part of your safari experience with us, you will have the opportunity to visit the centre and the animals in our care. Upon arrival at the Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, you will be met by a member of this caring team who will show you the facilities and explain what it is that they do.
It’s not an interactive visit, but informative and educational experience, in order to give animals the best chance at a successful release. During the recovery phase, “patients” are kept in custom built camps. Provided there are animals in care, an opportunity to meet them should arise during your visit.
In partnership with actress, author and wildlife campaigner, Virginia McKenna’s Born Free Foundation, Shamwari Private Game Reserve designed the Animal Rescue and Education Centres to incorporate the sanctuary and educational facility.
Their goal is to create awareness of the horrific way in which wildlife is exploited in captivity around the world. The centres aim to draw attention to the plight of wild big cats, confined in impoverished, captive environments throughout the world.
Over the years the Born Free Foundation has been able to rescue several big cats from impoverished situations. Born Free focuses on promoting the conservation of species and the protection of habitat whilst maintaining a humane and compassionate approach to the welfare of animals.
